MEDICATIONS: WHAT EVERY EDUCATOR SHOULD KNOW

This presentation will discuss medications commonly used to treat mental illness. We will review the possible side effects, how medication can affect learning and other issues that your students may encounter.  

ABOUT Dr. David Gardner & Dr. Andrea Murphy

Dr. David Gardner is a Professor with the Department of Psychiatry and has a joint appointment with the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University. Dr. Gardner has worked in the area of mental health for over 20 years, as a clinical pharmacist and academic. He has 60 peer reviewed publications, a book titled Antipsychotics and Their Side Effects and has received several recognitions locally and nationally for his excellence in teaching. In 2012, he received the Canadian Pharmacists Association’s Canadian Pharmacist of the Year Award.  

Dr. Andrea Murphy is an Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie University and cross appointed with the School of Nursing and the Department of Psychiatry. She is a Clinic Pharmacist at the Dalhousie University School of Social Work Community Clinic. Dr. Murphy’s research focuses on how medicines, other interventions, and care models impact health. She recently has been working on several projects that aim to improve mental health care services provided in community pharmacies.
