What Happens When A Suicidal or Self-Harming Youth Visits the ER

This session will provide a better understanding of what happens when a youth visits the Emergency Room. We will also discuss realistic expectations of the role of emergency mental health in the continuum of mental health care. Expect to gain a better understanding of how to best help youth during an apparent crisis.  

ABOUT Dr. David Lovas

Dr. David Lovas, MD, FRCPC is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, the physician lead of the Emergency Mental Health & Addictions Service (EMHAS) of the IWK and the Program Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency at Dalhousie. He received his MD at Dalhousie Medical School, and his general psychiatry residency, psychosomatic medicine fellowship and child and adolescent psychiatry residency training all at Harvard Medical School. His clinical work is in pediatric emergency mental health and he is conducting CIHR-funded research in this area with the Sobey Family Chair in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Outcomes, Leslie Ann Campbell, PhD.
